There is a serious lack of qualified teachers and nurses in many rural areas in Malawi. Those who grow up in these areas and leave to receive the necessary education and training seldom return.

This project offered grants to four university students, two female and two male, from the Monkey Bay area. Two of the students studied nursing in St Luke College of Nursing & Midwifery and Edwendeni College of Nursing & Midwifery, one received teacher training at The Catholic University of Malawi and one undertook graduate studies in education at the Chancellor College, University of Malawi. It was a condition of the grant that all four students signed an agreement to return to Monkey Bay after completing their studies.

Aurora Foundation, in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Reykjavik, sponsored the four students by paying for school fees, school supplies and housing.
