Ensuring Quality with Care – How Sweet Salone Upholds Standards Across Our Artisan Network

Every product carries a story—of tradition, creativity, and the hands that made it. An initiative by the Aurora Foundation, Sweet Salone is more than just a brand. It is a platform that connects talented artisans in Sierra Leone with European designers and international markets, offering opportunities for growth, learning, and income generation.

Each item is handcrafted with care, reflecting the cultural heritage and skills of the artisans behind it. While every piece is unique, we also place great importance on quality, consistency, and craftsmanship. That’s why we’ve developed thoughtful quality assurance measures that support both our artisans and the customers who value their work.

Regular Workshop Visits: We visit our partner artisans in their workshops on a regular basis. These visits help us provide ongoing support while ensuring that products remain true to the original designs and align with Sweet Salone’s values and aesthetic standards.

Careful Quality Checks: Before any item leaves Sierra Leone, it goes through detailed inspections. We check for symmetry, proper proportions, smooth finishes, and the absence of cracks or structural issues. This helps ensure that customers receive high-quality products, and artisans gain confidence in their work.

Capacity-Building Workshops: As part of our commitment to skills development, we regularly organize workshops for artisans across the Sweet Salone network. These sessions focus on improving techniques, reducing production errors, and encouraging consistency, while also promoting innovation and pride in their craft.

Product Prototypes and Reference Materials: We keep a catalogue of product prototypes that artisans can refer to, helping them reproduce designs accurately while preserving creative expression. This system allows for consistency, especially when fulfilling repeated or bulk orders.

Constructive Feedback and Collaboration: We prioritize open and respectful communication. When we notice repeated issues in production, we engage directly with the artisans to find solutions together—whether that means reworking an item or adjusting techniques to prevent future issues.

Learning from Data for Continous Improvement: By tracking feedback, production challenges, and artisan input, we collect valuable data that helps us continuously improve our processes. These insights guide decisions during product development and help us maintain quality while supporting artisans to grow.At its heart, Sweet Salone is about partnership and opportunity—creating meaningful connections between Sierra Leonean artisans, European designers, and people around the world who appreciate handcrafted, ethical design. Our quality measures are just one part of a bigger picture: helping artisans thrive while sharing the beauty of their work with the world.
